Science week Monday 27th June 2022

Today was the first day of Science week, and we had a launch assembly, thought about the STEM careers we are aware of, made milk out of plastic and created a flower out of paper. For more detail see below.

Our launch assembly was lots of fun with a giant helium filled fish flying around our heads! We discussed the forces involved in making the remote control fish move around the assembly hall.

There were dancing raisins (carbon dioxide bubbles elevating the raisins to the surface before popping and allowing the raisin to drop to the bottom of the glass), Lava Lamps (with oil and coloured water layered with an effervescent tablet producing gas bubbles which rose through the oil layer), floating oranges (orange skin acts like a life jacket, trapping air to make the orange buoyant) and much, much more! If you would like to try some experiments like these with your children at home try this website!

We then made environmentally friendly plastic using milk and vinegar. This chemical reaction used acid to change the pH of the milk and caused it to form curds. The liquid changed into a liquid and a solid. We discussed the properties of this new solid and moulded it into shapes. We will now observe this plastic over time to see what happens to it and if it undergoes any changes.

We were then set a challenge to design and create a flower using just 4 pieces of paper and nothing else other than our imaginations and our problem-solving and creativity skills!

I think you'll agree that we did well!

More fun tomorrow!
