Friday 26th February

Today was the Year 5 Magna Carta day! We all dressed up as medieval peasants and it was led by medieval Lady Katherine (who we found asleep, so Ciaran poked her awake) and she hired two Maids (Rosie and Hana) and seven Squires (Frederick, Harrison, Ciaran, James, Joel, William and Jake) to help her with getting changed and showing us what her husband, Sir Robert, Would wear to battle. Later, we played a farming game, where we coloured and cut out animals to sell at market. And every now and then, we would be taxed by King John. It was very tricky, but we all managed to make enough money to feed our families. After break, we learned how to scribe with quills, which was difficult because the ink was very wet. We scribed in Latin, which was very tricky to do, especially when we did capital letters! In the afternoon, we learned how to fight. First we used spears and learned how to jab. Then we used swords to jab at the opponent’s head, shoulders, chest and legs. After that, We learned how to block the attacks with a shield, And finally learned to joust. It was a very exciting day for Year 5 and we enjoyed it very much.

Friday 18th December

This week we have had a new member join us, his name is Jake, and he has settled in really well.

We have been reading Charles Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol’. We have loved reading the wonderful descriptions he used to describe characters. We wrote our own description of Scrooge using some of his ideas.

We learnt about why we celebrate Christmas in the way we do today, much of the reason is down to Charles Dickens and his book which helped to make it more popular.

Miss Fozzard has been very brave and has let us paint our Viking Longhouses. They are looking really good, here are some photos for you to see the progress. You will be able to see the finished product when they return home tonight!

Merry Christmas!

Today we read an article about Chris Packham and his mission to bring Wolves back to the UK. We can’t decide if we think it is a good idea or not but are relieved that they will be introduced in Scotland and not here!

In maths we have been measuring angles. We have been solving problems related to triangles, we loved having to draw our own triangles from the angles we were given. It was a great challenge!

We have learnt all of one of our songs for Young Voices, it is ‘Utter Madness’, it involves a dance routine too.

We are so excited to have our Christmas cards back that we made a while ago. They look so good as real cards.

Friday 13th November

We also read a letter from Winston Churchill’s wife, Clemmie, that she sent to him during the war. We also read a letter from Charles Darwin, his handwriting was really hard to read!

We are having a fabulous time in PE with Ms David, we are continuing out dance and have begun to add our own ideas into the motif we learnt last week. In PSHE we wrote poems to go with our dance, Ms David is so impressed with us. We can’t wait to put it all together.

We have been looking at negative number in mathematics this week, and we have looked word problems about temperature.

We wrote a poem about transport, Evan wrote about a Lamborghini! We included onomatopoeia for the sounds we hear in our transport. Jacob wrote “the grumble of the engine”

Friday 16th October

On Wednesday, we visited Ely Cathedral and saw the lovely engraving on the walls and Stained Glass Windows.

We met a Tudor Nun who taught us about Henry VIII (who was Luca), his wives and his children (Adele was Mary). We learnt about the Dissolution of the Monasteries, she asked us to decide whether she stayed at Ely and picked herbs, go and live with her parents and become a spinster, live with her friends or go abroad.

We also met a Victorian Soldier, he talked about different facts about Victorian Soldiers, including their uniform and the weapons we used. He demonstrated with a boy from another school, how they used Bayonets – luckily no one was harmed in the process. He then took us outside with a Rifle and fired a blank shot and loads of smoke came out, it was so exciting!!

We enjoyed making our Christmas Cards (we know its early, but we need them to be made into real cards quickly). We hope you look forward to seeing them.

Friday 9th October

During this week we have developed our persuasion skills within English, We have created a leaflet about Great Britain telling people to come and visit using our persuasive language.

We have a new Book Review folder in our classroom, we are enjoying telling people about the books that we have read.

In Spanish we have been carrying on from the work we did last week. Learning about the weather and pretending to be weather presenters and presented the weather to each other.

In Science we answered the question; is the world flat? Many years ago people believed that it was because they thought the horizon was the edge of the world, and were too frightened to venture near it. Aristotle was the one of the first people to realise that it was spherical.

In topic we have learnt that the Vikings invaded many other countries besides us and used boats to get to those countries. We designed different prows for the ship, they were on the boats to show the spirit of the ship and to scare off those that they were invading. If they weren’t invading then they would remove it from the prow.

We are so excited today as from our classroom we can see the Bouncy Castles being inflated, we are looking forward to having a bounce later!!!
