We have been reading the story of Rapunzel. We have looked at the characters and the setting of the story. We have been working really hard to describe the characters and the setting using adjectives and we have been trying to use the prefix ‘un’ to show how it can change a word.

We have been measuring again this week. We have been measuring weight using different activities. In one activity we had lots of different sized boxes and we had to guess which was the heaviest and which was the lightest. When we picked them up we were surprised with the results. We also weighed ourselves on some scales to see who was the heaviest and who was the lightest, we found out that we have lots of muscles in our class. We used the Ipads to play some measuring games on mathletics and we also used the balance scales to weigh and compare objects.

DSCF2136 DSCF2137 DSCF2138 DSCF2139

We also planted some peppers in our vegetable patch on the field. We have planted some seeds in the classroom and we need to wait for them to grow before we can plant them outside. We found lots and lots of mini beasts in our vegetable patch.

This week we have been writing all about our personal information, we filled in a form and then we decided that it was not safe to have our personal information such as phone number, name and address written down so we took them to the office to shred them.

We wrote all about when we are online and how to be safe as well as a story and Lee and Kim who were playing on a game and talking to people.

We looked at all the qualities that made a really good person and a really good friend and we put these into a treasure chest.

We made masks and presented to be other people to see what it is like what you chat online, you never know who someone really ids so you must be careful. We talked about using nicknames and came up with our own unusual ones.

We made graphs seeing who felt safe doing different activities online.

We had a debate in assembly on if you should give out your personal information.

We found out that when you put a picture on the internet it can go all over the world in a very short time. in 4 days Mrs Loakes’ picture was seen over 212, 000 times. It travelled as far as Thailand, America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Finland and many many more

This week we have been working really, really hard on our handwriting. Everybody tried their best.

In science this week we have been looking at light and dark. We conducted an experiment with some boxes. First the boxes were dark and we couldn’t see what was in them. Then we put a torch in the box and with a light source we could see what was in the box. Even Hannah the hedgehog was hiding in one!!

In maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We have been looking at edges, vertices and faces. We will be building 3D shapes next week.

In English we read Handa’s surprise and we had some real fruits in to describe using adjectives. We looked inside the avocado and the passion fruit.

DSCF1457 DSCF1458 DSCF1459 DSCF1460 DSCF1461 DSCF1462 DSCF1464

In our topic we started to plan and design our cars!!!! We will be making them next week.

Friday 14th November 2014

This week in our science we have been looking at light and dark. We split the class into 2 groups. One group went on a walk around school to find sources of light and the other group had to make a dark cave for little bear.

DSCF1431 DSCF1434 DSCF1436 DSCF1438 DSCF1439 DSCF1442 DSCF1445 DSCF1450 DSCF1452 DSCF1454

We have been making aeroplanes in our topic this week from pegs and lollipop sticks. Next week we will be looking at world maps and flying our aeroplanes to different countries to find out what some capital cities are.

In maths we have been counting in 5’s, 10’s and 2’s. We are practicing really hard at this and learning our number bonds.

In English we have been looking at more stories. We have been using adjectives to describe characters and the setting of the story. Today we have written some stories of our own and they are amazing!

DSCF1422 DSCF1423 DSCF1424 DSCF1425

In assembly today we had some special visitors. They told us that they are going to come back to the school and let us take part in the Pro kick challenge, where we can raise money, have fun, possibly win a medal or football and be entered into a prize draw. Sponsor forms will be coming home next week.

Friday 7th November 2014

In our English lessons this week we have been looking at more stories. We have been looking at the story ‘Can’t you sleep little bear’. We started by looking at the front cover and thinking about what might happen in the story. We had lots of ideas about darkness, monsters, the bear being poorly and many more. We then acted out the story using some drama skills, one person had to be the big bear, one the little bear and one the narrator. Have a look at our videos (if they work)

In maths we have been looking at counting in 2’s and 10’s. We have had a quick look at when we count in 2’s we can multiply by 2. We enjoyed a cutting and sticking activity of Noah’s Ark, making sure the animals were in 2’s.

In science we have started our new topic of light and dark. We looked at what light sources were and we went to very dark cupboards to see what it was like when there was no light source at all. We thought that it was very dark and a little bit scary in the cupboard as you couldn’t see any of your friends, it was like having your eyes closed even though they were open. It was a good job that Mrs Holl was there to keep us safe.

In our theme lesson we showed and talked about Karl Benz. We had found out lots of information about him over the half term holiday. We also looked at maps of Buckden and we even drew our own fantastic maps!

In a few weeks we will be making cars from boxes and milk lids. Please can we have any spare small boxes and milk lids from home. Thank you

This week we have been finishing off our topic about materials in science, exploring why some of our boats floated and others didn’t.

In PE we have been looking at different ways of moving using a variety of equipment. Some of the children played a ‘teacher’ role in our lesson and taught the other children some of the ways in which they have discovered how to move and we learnt from each other.

In our big write we wrote our very own fairy tales which were really interesting to read. We have been working hard on forming our sentences correctly ensuring that we use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We developed our characters and some of us talked about how we can use speech marks within our writing. Miss Hearth had great fun reading about our princess’, dragons, knights, mermaids and much, much more!

In our maths we have been working on our number bonds to 10. We have been playing lots of games to get quicker at thinking about which 2 numbers make 10. We really enjoyed running around outside to find the right number and had to problem solve when the answer was 10 but there was not a number 10 mat. As a class we decided to put the 1 and 0 mats together to make the number 10.

We are all ready for a break as we have worked really hard this half term and produced some amazing work. Over the holiday we do have a ‘talk’ homework to complete. All of hedgehogs class have brought a sheet home, however if you have lost or misplaced it please find a copy below.

Talk homework

Have a lovely half term!!!!

This week in hedgehogs we have been looking at fairy tales in our English lessons. We have looked at the beginning, the middle and end as well as describing characters using lots of adjectives. we have read beauty and the beast, snow white, little red riding hood and Cinderella. Next week we will be planning and writing our very own fairy tales!!!!

In science this week we tested our boats in a paddling pool to see if they would float or sink.

Isabelle, Tyler and Ava made boats that floated for a little while and then sank. Have a look at our photos of us with our boats!

On Monday we went to church for a special harvest assembly. Charlie is a puppet and he was at our assembly. He was talking about harvest and how we should be thankful for the fruit and vegetables, for the food we get. We all enjoyed year 6’s offering who sang the dingle dangle scarecrow song.

For our topic work we made a survey of transport in Buckden. We went to count how many of each type of transport we could see and then we put this information into a graph using the netbooks.

We have been looking at stories in English this week, finding the beginning, the middle and the end. We planned our own story about a journey that we had been on or a journey that we had made up and we wrote all about it in our big write.

We have been making boats in science. We made them from plastic containers, cardboard boxes, lollipop sticks, paper, fabric and anything else that we could find. We stuck them together using glue and tape. Next week we will be testing them to see if they float or sink.

We have been looking at fractions again in maths and halving things. We have cut out shapes and cut them in half, we have coloured in halves and quarters of shapes and we have practiced writing fractions. We started to look at word problems and halving items such as fish or people. We will be working on this a little more next week.

In our Spanish we have been writing and practicing to say ‘me llamo’. We wrote this in our books and drew a picture of ourselves. ‘Me llamo’ means ‘my name is’.

We have been practicing ready for our special harvest assembly on Monday.

We have had read, white and blue day today. We all wore these colours and looked amazing! We did this to celebrate armed forces day and raise money for the soldiers, their families and their welfare.

Last week we helped the reception children complete some maths activities. On Friday we had a maths afternoon, where parents were invited in to help us have fun with maths. We looked after the reception children to help them play games, read the instructions and help them to work it out.

One activity was building a stack with cups, have a look at our super tall towers!

In our music last week we were listening to a piece of music about a train going on a journey. We went on our own journey listening carefully to the music and ‘chugging’ in time.

We have been preparing for our harvest festival celebration by making a collage. As part of this we made sweet corn. To make our corn look more fabulous we decided to make it with popcorn. Mrs Holl brought in some popcorn seeds, she heated a pan and added some oil then we had to wait!

We waited and we waited and we waited………

Then we heard it making a noise. Mrs Holl lifted the lid off and the popcorn popped everywhere, even on the floor. We thought it was really funny. We used the popcorn to make our pictures and then we had some to eat. It was yummy and delicious.

In our maths we have been learning about fractions, we have been folding and cutting shapes into halves and quarters.

In English we have been thinking about stories and looking at summarising our story concentrating on the beginning, the middle and the end. We have been looking at characters, we have drawn them, we have labelled them and we have pretended to be them.

Last week we had a very exciting science lesson. We were looking at materials and tested to see if they floated or sank in the water.

First we made an estimate about our materials and whether they would float or sink. Then we tested this out. We then had a look at the results we found and our original estimations to see if we were right. We have been testing materials in water because we are going to make boats. We had to test the materials to see which ones will be good for making boats. We decided that wood, plastic and tin foil would be good to make a boat.

If you find anything at home we could use to make boats with please could you send it in.

We also were celebrating European day. On Friday we dressed up in European dress and has a very special French menu at lunch time. We learnt about Austria, we looked at what they wear, what they eat an what the country is like. We made fact files and listened to some Austrian music, we even had a go at yodelling. Mr Button (Ava’s Grandad) came in to see us and showed us his accordion. We really enjoyed listening to him play.

Monday 22nd September 2014

Last week in our English lessons we were talking about instructions. We learnt that instructions tell people what to do. Instructions can help you to build things such as lego.

We started to make our Christmas cards, that will be sent home and can be ordered. These cards are a picture that we have made and then they are printed into cards for you to give to friends and family. These will be coming home this week for you to look at.

We have had 2 lots of PE last week. We looked at ways of travelling in the hall and outside we played toilet tag and learnt how to do teddy bear rolls.

We have worked really hard last to learn about addition and subtraction using a number line. We will be working hard on that again this week. In big maths beat that we are proud because EVERYONE improved upon their score from the previous week which is really good because it was only week 3!

Monday 15th September 2014

Last week was our very first full week in year 1. Some of us thought it was easy and other thought it was hard.

We remembered: we did lots of writing about a picture we saw, where there were lots of people rushing to get to work.
We have been learning our number bonds to 10. Can you think which 2 numbers go together to make 10?
We had a special assembly by someone from the history society, showing us how in olden times they used to change the colour of wool by using plants.

We have been exploring our new topic planes, trains and automobiles. We looked at a timeline of when different transport was invented. We discovered the steam train was created first followed by the automobile and finally the plane.

We went on a learning walk around the school, as part of our science lesson to look for different types of materials.

Hedgehogs had lots of fun in their first week!
