We have had a very exciting week in Newton class, we have especially enjoyed Science this week where, in our topic of ‘Plants’, we have learnt the parts of a tree. We went out and did tree rubbings and then painted a tree.

We have had a very exciting this week, a UFO had crashed landed on the school field on Monday morning and the children had a fantastic time investigating the landing site and looking for clues. We then predicted what had happened and why.

In Mathematics we are learning about wholes, halves and quarters. To practise these skills we made a pizza and talked about when we had eaten a quarter and a half.

We have enjoyed practising our pieces for our whole school PAC performance and looking forward to showing them to you.

We have continued with our repeated addition and multiplication learning in Mathematics this week and will be moving onto division next.

In English we have all done a fantastic job in writing a diary entry in first person taking on the role of Anna, heading into the storm and diving deep into the ocean to find the sunken treasure.

We have enjoyed learning cricket in our PE lessons and we all had a great time using a cricket bat correctly. We are continuing with our focused text in English of ‘How to find gold’. We are securing our knowledge and understanding of counting in 2’s and relating this to repeated addition and our timestables.

Welcome back! We have had a busy first week back, continuing with our topic of Rainforests. In RE we are focusing on parables, especially ‘The lost son’.

Our targets in Mathematics are Telling the time to the hour and half an hour. We need to also be secure in counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

In English we need to use and understand suffixes (un-) and prefixes (-er, -est, -ing, -ed). We need to be secure in what is happening in the story and be aware of the characters feelings and why they are feeling like that.

In English we have written instructions to help Anna and the Crocodile to find gold.

Today in Mathematics we hve introduced multiplication and been learning about making equal groups.

As a school after Easter we will be doing regular mind up lessons and brain breaks throughout the school. To introduce this we have learnt to control our breathing using cotton wool balls.

In Keystage One we are making our library a more exciting place to come and read. We have introduced reading buddies and we have moved around the furniture.

In RE we have been acting out the Easter story. It was very fun as we all took on the different roles of everyone involved.

For our Science learning this week, we went and found different animal habitats and look at all of the different mini beasts we found;

Our Mathematics learning has been focused on number patterns. We have been finding more and less of a given number and finding the missing number using numberlines and hundred squares.

We have had a great week back!

Throughout the school we are using ‘The Power Of Reading’ materials and focusing on one text for a number of weeks to gain a high interest and enthusiasm in reading. In Year One we have loved reading and focusing our English learning on Traction Man! Here we are taking on the of Traction Man or Scrubbing Brush and we have written our predictive thoughts on Traction Mans present of his green romper suit with matching bonnet.

No homework apart from reading, as it is half term! : ) Feel free to keep practising your counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Spring 2 targets are –

Mathematics Targets
I can solve problems using + and –
I can use counting to solve problems with bigger numbers.
English Targets
Writing
I can spell days of the week.
I can add –un to the start of a word to make the word different.
Reading
I can read words with an apostrophe (‘) and understand the meaning.
I can usual spot if a word is read wrongly by following the text.

We have had a fantastic time in Science exploring our senses, in an experiment. We used our taste buds to taste a range of flavours, our hands and eyes to describe and touch a range of materials, we had musical instruments to make different sounds and finally, a range of mystery things to smell. It was very fun!

Please bring in a cardboard box for our Topic lesson on Friday.

In English we have written the ending to our 500 word story (these will be photocopied and set home if you wish to enter the competition) and written a letter to Grace, Who is a character in the class reading book we have read this week.

We have been learning to recognise 2D and 3D shapes and their properties.

Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful break.

We have had a lovely short week this week. We went on a journey to find our calm, thoughtful and happy place in school to start our new RE topic of Special places.

Our new new topic is ‘Inventions that changed the world’.

In Science we are learning about the human body.

Our PE days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure your child has their indoor and outdoor PE kit in school at all times.

Our talk homework this week is to discuss rhyming couplets and share any examples you can think of.

The new Mathematics homework sheet has been sent home – please return every Tuesday.

Please ensure you read with your child daily.

In Computing we have learnt how to make our characters jump on our programming app, Scratch.

We have enjoyed our fiction text ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ in English. We have learnt about the characters and questions. We are going onto setting descriptions.

We completed a new warm up, coping different actions of ‘Jump Start Jonny’.

Talk homework – Talk about your favourite fairytale book and bring it in to share.

In our English we have planned and made a page each, writing about our toys, using non-fiction sentences to make a giant class book.

In Mathematics we have been learning how to subtract. We have talked about the different vocabulary (subtract, minus and take away). We have completed subtraction problems by crossing out, jumping back and using a subtraction machine.

We have been to church this week to remember the soliders in the wars and we watched a special video to help us remember.

In Science we have made firework pictures and found out that it was better to create our chalk pictures on black paper rather than white, discussing the differnce in watching fireworks at night in the dark to if we watched them during the day in the light.

We made a dark tent in our classroom and explored how difficult it is to find things in the dark. This helped our Science learning of light and dark.

We have had fun bringing in our favourite toys from home. We have written non-fiction sentences about them in our English lessons.

We are really enjoying doing ‘Big Maths’ on Fridays.

We have been using Scratch in our computing lesson to learn how to programme.

We have been also solving addition problem stories using pictures in Mathematics.

We have all enjoyed our guided reading sessions, in small groups.

We have been learning the book Handa’s surprise and tasting all of the delicious fruits that she collects. We have also been role-playing the story, each becoming an animal from the journey Handa went on.

In PE with Miss Lizell we have been furthering our throwing a catching skills and some of us even got a housepoint for great participation! Well done!!! We also warmed up with a fun game of tag.

We have begun our Maths no problem books and working super hard to complete our learning in comparing objects this week.
