Friday 4th May 2018

This week has been incredibly busy in Goodall class.

We have made suffix fortune tellers to help us with using our suffixes in our writing. We have written wonderful diary entries pretending to be Anna or the Crocodile while they were out at sea sailing towards a storm.

In Maths we have continued looking at multiplication we have done lots of work about how to use different resources to help support us but we have learned the important rules that the first number is how many groups and the second is how many in each group.

In Science we have planted to kinds of seeds and after working out which was which and what they are, we cannot wait to watch them grow.

In Music and PE we have continued to learn our song and dance ready to perform at the PAC in June!

The children have thoroughly enjoyed English this week. We have continued the story ‘How to Find Gold.’ we have created treasure maps, planned and written our own adventure stories written in 1st person and using lots of prefix’s and suffix’s.

In Maths this week we have looking at multiplication, we have been learning about doubling and word problems. We have been using lots of resources to help us a practicing the difference between groups (columns) and rows.

We have also been learning our song and dance tht we will be performing in the PAC, which we are all very excited about.

In English this week we have finally learned the title to the new book ‘How To Find Gold’ and we have helped Anna and Crocodile find that gold by writing a set of instructions.

This week in Maths we have finished looking at word problems which has been very challenging but we have really enjoyed using lots of different resources to help us solve the addition and subtraction questions.

In Topic we have started to create a piece of artwork to demonstrate the wet and dry seasons that rainforests have.

In English we have been learning about a story that we don’t yet know the title of. We have been thinking about what the characters; what they look like and their personalities.

We have been looking and learning about word problems in Maths. We have found these tricky as we have to think about if a question is asking us to take away or add.

In Topic we’ve painted macaws. We looked at three different types of macaw and what colours they are. We then looked at them flying and standing, where the colours are on their body. Then we mixed some powder to create our own pictures.

In English this week we have finished looking at Traction Man by creating our own Traction Man stories. We have also been looking the ‘un’ prefix, what it means and what happens to a word when we use it.

This week in Maths we have been using dienes cubes to represent larger numbers. We then used this information to compare number, look at more and less and number patterns.

We went for a mini-beast hunt around the school, safely caught some examples including a massive spider which freaked all of us out! We then used magnifying glasses to take a closer look then drew our favourites and discussed some facts.

This has been an awesome week.

In English the children have created their own stories to put together to make their own Traction Man books with some very creative ideas. We have planned them and reenacted them some even in sand and snow.

Maths this week has been very hands on, we have been using denies cubes to help us look at trickier questions with larger numbers and embedding our understanding of tens and ones, what they are and what they mean.

In Spanish this week we have been learning the months of the year through singing and greeting.

Daily reading

This week in English we have been reading ‘Traction Man.’ We have had a great time reading it and have really enjoyed it. We started off by learning about thought bubbles and wrote our own pretending to be a character from the story. We then started acting the story out with props for the characters and have written our own book reviews.

In Maths this week we have been practising all the skills we have learned since the start of year 1. This has really made us think! Finally we have looked at using dienes cubes to talk about hundreds, tens and ones.

This week we have started our new topic of ‘The Rainforest’ we have looked at South America, the countries that we can find there and where the Andes and Amazon are. We have discussed the different layers of the rainforest and we look forward to learning more.

In Maths this week, we have been learning about 2D shapes and 3D shapes. We have looked at the names of the shapes and discussed their properties. We have been outside in the nature area making shapes out of natural resources and enjoyed it very much.

In English, we have starter writing our 500 word stories based on Little Red Riding Hood but we have changed the main character to ourselves. We have planned and written the ending and included exclamation marks!

This week in Topic we learned about Alexander Graham Bell, who he was and what he invented that has changed our lives. Using this information we designed and created our own string cup mobile phones.

Active Mathematics.

We have really enjoyed ourselves this week, especially in Maths. We went outside with pine cones and played a really fun subtraction game then we created our own and taught it to our friends.

In English we were walking around the field pretending it was a forest to help us think of as many different adjectives to describe it and then imagining we were there and thinking about what we might be able to see, hear, feel and smell. This is all to help us write our own versions of Little Red Riding Hood.

In Computing we talked about the technology that we have in school and then compared it to the technology we have at home. Then drew pictures to demonstrate what we have available to us.

Active Mathematics.

In English this week we have been looking at shape poems. We have discovered what they are and why they are called shape poems. After this we learned about alliteration we then used this to create our own shape poems about different weather.

This week in maths we have been learning  new techniques to help us with our adding of two digit numbers. We learned about partitioning numbers into tens and ones and using this to help us with our adding.

In topic this week we were inspired by our investigation of who John Logie Baird was and what he invented. We discovered that he invented the first television then we looked at how they have changed over time. Finally we designed our own future television.

Talk Homework: What are rhyming couplets? Think of your own examples.

In Maths this week we have been looking at adding numbers within 20, we have ordered numbers and counted objects looking at quicker ways of counting them.

In English this week we have been looking at poems and learning about rhyming couplets and alliteration. We have discussed what they are and where they go. We have even performed some poems to the class thinking about are voices and our actions.

In Science this week we have started learning about the human body. We labelled parts of the body then came up with our own versions of head, shoulders, knees and toes.

Talk homework – Talk about what characters (three goodies and 1 bady) and setting you could use for your own fairytale story, using the ‘Three Billy goats gruff’ as a story guide.

Active Mathematics homework – In your children’s bookbags. Please sign, date and return weekly.

This week in English we have been looking at the story and the setting of The Billy Goats Gruff. We started the week off by looking at different settings and using excellent adjectives. Then we went to the hall and pretended we were the Billy goats gruff and the troll in their actual setting. We then planned our independent write by either building it or drawing it. Finally we have written our setting descriptions as a postcard.

In Maths this week we have been looking at positional language. We started the week off with races and using the language first, second, third and so on. Then we looked at placing people in the correct place depending on their position.

We have really enjoyed Science this week. We have looked at reflecting light off of objects and experimented which objects reflected light and which objects didn’t by shining a torch on them.

We have also continued to practise our Christmas play which we are looking forward to showing you all in a couple of weeks.

Talk Homework: To greet your family in Spanish and talk about all the different ways we can say ‘hello’.

In English we have read the ‘Three Billy Goats Gruff’ and we have looked at the characters in the story. We have been using our punctuation skills to write questions for the Billy Goats Gruff and the Troll then we hot seated them to find out more information about them.

This week in Maths we have looked at subtraction again and also how they relate to addition questions for example in fact families and making addition stories and number sentences.

We have been designing and describing our own made up toys on a sheet of paper. We needed to think about the colours of our toy and what they are made out of.

Talk Homework: Talk about your favourite fairytale book and bring it in to share.

This week in English the children have been creating their own class non-fiction book about the toy they brought in last week. We looked at the materials they were made out of and why they were made out of it. We also looked at the colours and who plays with that toy. They have made some wonderful pieces of independent writing based around this,

In Maths we have been looking at subtraction and different methods we can use. We began the week looking at crossing out and then have finished the week by counting backwards and using a numberline which the children were very excited about.

We have been learning how to ask someones name in Spanish this week. We then followed this up with learning 2 different ways to reply. We found this extremely fun.

Talk homework: Find dark places in your house and explain why they are dark.

In English this week the children have been really enjoying learning about non-fiction writing. We started the week off by comparing non-fiction books to fiction books and looking at the difference way sentences are written. We even had a go at writing our own with our own toy.

This week in Maths we have been practising the skill of counting on by putting one number in our heads then counting on with the other. This has helped us speed up our maths calculation. We have also been talking about the equals sign and what it means.

The children have really enjoyed lots of other lessons this week from learning the Spanish alphabet talking about the birth of Jesus. But they have enjoyed Science the most. We have been discussing dark places and we looked at some that we can find out and about then the children went outside to find any dark places they could around the school. When the children had come back a den had been built and the children had to find objects in the dark.

This week in Goodall Class we have enjoyed PE, we have really enjoyed exploring different ways to to travel in gymnastics and learning about and playing Rugby.

In Maths we have been using number trees to help us make numbers and exploring all the different ways to make that number.

English has been very interesting this week. We have planned and written our own endings to Handa’s Surprise.

Finally in Topic we have made cars out of our recycled materials, we hope they will work we test them next week.

What a fantastic week we have had in Goodall class.

This week in Maths we have been looking at numbers and their worth. We have also started our work on Maths No Problem which we are really excited about.

In English we have learnt about the word ‘and.’ We have talked about how and when to use it then even gave it a go by joining words and sentences together.

Science has been very exciting this week because we were finally able to build our boats ready for testing next week to see if they will sink or float. We thought hard and chosen carefully in order to make the best boat we can.

Friday 29th September 2017

We have finished looking  at Big Bear and Little Bear in ‘Can’t You Sleep Little Bear.’ This week  we have been looking at the different setting in the story and we have been using some brilliant descriptive words.

In Maths the focus has been on subtraction and using different resources to help us solve different subtraction questions. We have really enjoyed using number beads, number lines and cubes.

The class have had a fantastic time designing their own boats in their Science lessons. They have brought in different materials ready for next Wednesday to build the boats and test their designs to see if they will float or sink in the water.

Friday 22nd September

The children have been working extremely hard this week. They have been becoming and describing characters from the story ‘Can’t Sleep Little Bear?’ which we have thoroughly enjoyed reading.

We have started number work in our Maths lessons and looked at lots of different resources and methods we can use to help us with our addition, then we chose our favourite.

We have really enjoyed practising our Spanish as well, we have learned how to say hello and also good bye with our favourite being ‘hasta luego.’

Friday 15th September 2017

This week in English the children have loved following instructions to make a jam sandwich and eating them. Then writing their own instructions on how to make a jam sandwich.

The children have also enjoyed discovering 3d shapes and particularly their properties. we have been counting the sides, the faces and the vertices. We have also looked at some more obscure properties like which shapes stack and which shapes roll.

In Science we have loved walking round the room identifying the different materials we can find and then deciding on their properties.
