Friday 23rd June 2017

This week in phonics we have been recapping the sounds we have already learnt. We are practicing tricky words and sentence writing.

On Tuesday we enjoyed an amazing trip to Shepreth. We had lots of fun looking at all the animals and learning about mini beasts in our talk. We really liked the tiger and the bats.

In our literacy we have been writing a book as a class based around the story of ‘Dear Zoo’. We have been writing about the animals and then making our own flaps to discover each animal.

In maths we have been looking at 10 frames and using numbers lines in preparation for year 1.

We enjoyed an assembly from Gener8 this week and we love the stories and the props that they use.

 

Friday 16th June 2017

This week in phonics we have been recapping the sounds we have already learnt. We are practicing tricky words and sentence writing.

In our literacy we have been exploring what we know about the sea side. We have been looking at the seaside in the past and what it is like now. We have learnt how people used to travel to the seaside and about what they used to wear when they went swimming.

In maths we have been looking at shapes. We are really confident with our 2D shapes and have been working really hard on our 3D shapes. We have been making shapes using straws and using shapes to make people.

We have been making healthy Gelato for our healthy eating stall this week. We used berries, milk, natural yogurt, vanilla essence and ice. we had to mix it all together and then put it in the freezer. Other classes made lots of yummy food too.

We are looking forward to our upcoming trip to Shepreth next week.

Welcome back, the children have been very excited sharing what they have been up to in the half term holiday.

This week in phonics we have been recapping the sounds we have already learnt. We are practicing tricky words and sentence writing.

In our literacy we have been exploring what we know about the sea side as this will be our topic for the next half a term. We have been listening to each other share the facts that we know about the sea side.

In maths we have been looking at counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We have made hands and bunting to look at the number patterns. Some of the children saw the patterns so well that they have been counting in 3’s.

At the start of the week we saw that our caterpillars were now butterflies and we released them into the outdoor area.

On Tuesday and Wednesday this week we had a science roadshow. We looked at a melting experiment, wrote up our experiment and shared our findings with Mondrian class. We also got to watch some really cool science shows.

 

Friday 19th May 2017

This week in phonics we have been recapping the sounds we have already learnt as there are some we are a little unsure of. We are using these sounds within our writing and thinking how to spell words listening for all the sounds. We have been practicing using our footprint words in sentences and looking at spelling them correctly.

In our literacy we have been looking at the story of Superworm. We really enjoyed reading the story and looking at how it rhymed. We also then learnt lots of facts about worms using non- fiction books and Ipads. We made a poster to show what we had found.

In maths we have been looking at calculations involving bigger numbers. We have been using bugs to count their legs and then add either 2 or 3 amounts together. We have been thinking about how we can show our working out and use practical objects to help us solve these calculations. We also had a look a some word problems.

Our caterpillars are now very big and we are hoping that they will form their cocoons soon.

This week in phonics we have been recapping the sounds we have already learnt as there are some we are a little unsure of. We are using these sounds within our writing and thinking how to spell words listening for all the sounds.

In our literacy we have been looking at the story of Norman the slug with the silly shell. We have looked this week at writing book reviews. The children have thought about if they like a book or not and what t tell others about a story. We have also looked at recycling. The children have learnt lots of facts and made posters.

In maths we have been looking at pattern. We have looked at what we can use to make patterns. We have looked at repeating patterns using colours, number, action etc.

We had caterpillars arrive this week and we have been watching them grow. It is very exciting.

 

Friday 5th May 2017

This week in phonics we have been recapping the sounds we have already learnt as there are some we are a little unsure of. We have been using the games on phonics play to reinforce our reading of the phonic sounds. We have also been looking at sentence structure and using what we have learnt in our writing.

In our literacy we have been looking at the story of The very hungry caterpillar. The children have been very busy. They have drawn their favourite part of the story, written the story, made books and have been painting.

In maths we have been looking at subtraction and finding the difference. This was quite tricky. We have been writing formal calculations and showing our working out using pictures.

We have made some butterfly feeders today and we hope to attract wildlife to our garden.

 

Friday 28th April 2017

This week in phonics we have been recapping the sounds we have already learnt as there are some we are a little unsure of. We have been using the games on phonics play to reinforce our reading of the phonic sounds. We have also been looking at sentence structure and using what we have learnt in our writing.

In our literacy we have been looking at the story of Paxton pits. We have written a letter to Otter, made a map of the Ouse valley, drawn our favourite characters and written about our trip.

In maths we have been looking at doubling. We have been doubling numbers and looking at counting in 2’s

We had a fantastic time at Paxton pits on our trip. We went bird watching and saw the ducks, cormorants, heron and swans on the lake. We went on a hunt to find clues as to who had written letters to Otter. We went pond dipping and found all sorts of creatures. It was a brilliant day!

Friday 21st April

We have had a great start to our first week back at school. We have started to look at our new topic ‘Down at the bottom of the garden’

This week in phonics we have been recapping the sounds we have already learnt as there are some we are a little unsure of. We have been using the games on phonics play to reinforce our reading of the phonic sounds. Why not try it at home.

In our literacy we have been looking at the life cycle of ducks. We have been looking at lots of non-fiction books and seeing how we can find out information from them. We have been writing about lots of different types of birds and sharing information with our friends.

In maths we have been looking at halving. We have been exploring halves of shapes and halves of numbers. This has been quite tricky.

We have also been talking about our trip next week. We are very excited.

This week is the first week the children will be bringing home spelling home work. We will test spellings on a Friday and new ones will be given.

This week in phonics we have been recapping the sounds we have already learnt as there are some we are a little unsure of. We have been using the games on phonics play to reinforce our reading of the phonic sounds. Why not try it at home.

In our literacy we have been looking at sentence structure and tricky words. We have been learning to spell the tricky words and we have been building sentences thinking about how to use full stops.

This week we really enjoyed sharing our superhero dance with our parents. We have worked really hard on it and loved making our own costumes. We also enjoyed sharing our work with you.

Friday 17th March 2017

This week we have continued to learn about superheroes. We have been looking at non-fiction texts.  We had another superhero from our community come in and talk about their job. 

This week in phonics we have been recapping the sounds we have already learnt as there are some we are a little unsure of.

In maths we have been looking at time. We began the week by thinking about what time means to us. We have looked at clocks, days of the week and calendars to show months of the year. We have also thought about season and we have been discussing what are short or long lengths of time. 

In our literacy we have been looking at non- fiction books. We have been drawing and writing about ‘real life superheroes’. 

Today we have all been dressed up for science day. We have had a fantastic day exploring lots of different experiments, including making gloop, using bottles and forks to make musical instruments, having balloon races, painting over wax and seeing if flowers in coloured water will change colour. 

Friday 10th March 2017

This week we have continued to learn about superheroes. We had a superhero from our community come in and talk about their job. It was amazing to see areal life superhero.

This week in phonics we have been recapping the sounds we have already learnt as there are some we are a little unsure of.

In maths we have been looking at subtraction. We have been using ten frames to subtract with and looking at patterns in number. We have also been looking at tricky calculations and using drawings to help us work them out.

In our literacy we have been rhyming. We have been learning that rhyming words have the same sounds at the end and we can change the beginning sound to make real a nonsense words that rhyme.

This week we have continued to learn about superheroes. We read the book super Daisy.

This week in phonics we have been recapping the sounds we have already learnt as there are some we are a little unsure of.

In maths we have been looking at estimation. We have been estimating how many things there might be and then counting them to see if we were close. We have also been thinking about using pictorial representations when working out calculations.

In our literacy we have been writing captions for a picture, making our own superhero name and we have been exploring super hero words.

We are still collecting white T shirts so we can make our own superhero costumes.

This week we have started our new topic of superheros. We have been reading the book Supertato and the children have been very excited about the evil pea. 

This week in phonics we have learnt the sounds air, ure and er

In maths we have been looking at position and direction. We have been using lots of vocabulary such as on top, under, behind, next to etc. We have been having treasure hunts outside and directing our friends. 

In our literacy we have read the story of Supertato. We have been busy making posters to catch the evil pea, writing captions for the vegetables and we have been writing what am I riddles. 

We are still collecting white T shirts so we can make our own superhero costumes. 

 

Friday 10th February 2017

This week in phonics we have learnt the sounds oi, ow and ear

In maths we have been looking at solving problems, using lots of concrete objects

In our literacy we have been looking at Little Red Riding Hood. We wrote an alternative story using a variety of options and a writing frame.

On Tuesday we took part in Safer Internet Awareness Day, we learnt what personal information was and that we shouldn’t share this with people we don’t know. We made a treasure chest to lock our personal information away in. We also talked about different types of computers and where we have seen them.

On Wednesday we took part in our inter-house cross country race.

This week in phonics we have learnt the sounds ar, ur, or.

In maths we have been looking at solving word problems, measuring weight and using shapes to draw pictures.

In our literacy we have been looking at the three little pigs, we have been writing stories, acting them out and using our phonics to spell words.

In our free learning time we have been building houses, practicing our writing, using the puppets and I pads to make stories as well as using our own ideas and thinking about objects that would and wouldn’t blow away.

In RE we have been looking at lots of different weddings from around the world.

In Spanish we sang head, shoulders, knees and toes.

 

Friday 6th January 2017

This week in phonics we have learnt the sounds qu. We are starting our next phase of phonics and will be moving onto digraphs (two letters with one sound)

In maths we have been looking at how we can separate numbers in different ways but the total is the same. We did this with 5 and 10 item and then we wrote the calculations.

In our literacy we have been sequencing stories and describing Jack as a character in our story. We have also been learning to use an app on the Ipads called puppet pals to make our own stories.

This week we have started our new topic of ‘Once upon a time’. We have started to think about traditional tales, what they are and if we know any. This week we have read Jack and the beanstalk. We have stared some literacy activities and creative activities such as painting.

 

We have had a PCSO in assembly talking about stranger danger.

 

Friday 9th December 2016

Firstly we would like to say a huge well done to all the children involved in the Christmas performance this week. I am sure that you will all agree that they were fantastic! They have worked so hard and it all paid off. We hope you enjoyed watching their performance.

In maths we have been focusing on teen numbers and how we can make these with 10 as a base. We have looked at numbers 19 and 20. We have also been counting backwards from 20. It was great to see so many of you at the maths morning that we held.

 

On Thursday we went to church, we had been learning about baptisms. After we had learnt a few things in the morning we went to see Rev Jes who showed us what a baptism is like. We had our baby Jesus baptised. We then asked Rev Jes lots of questions.

 

In our collective worship we have lit our third advent candle and talked about joy.

We have been unable to hear the children read this week as it has been very busy but we will all be back on track next week.

This week in phonics we have learnt the sounds j, w and v.

In maths we have been focusing on teen numbers and how we can make these with 10 as a base. We have looked at numbers 16, 17 and 18. We have also been counting backwards from 20. It was great to see so many of you at the maths morning that we held.

We have been practicing this week for our Christmas play and the children have wowed us with their lines and singing. We had a dress rehearsal this week and I think you will enjoy the show next week.

This week we have been making Chris tingle oranges. Rev Jes came in to talk to us about the meaning of Chris tingle and then we made our own. There is a church service next week on Saturday if you would like to go.

In our collective worship we have lit our second advent candle.

 

We have started to talk about Christmas and we are all very excited.

This week in phonics we have been reviewing all the sounds we have learnt so far to make sure that we are confident with them.

In maths we have been focusing on teen numbers and how we can make these with 10 as a base. We have looked at numbers 13, 14 and 15. We have also been counting backwards from 20.

We have been practicing this week for our Christmas play and the children have wowed us with their lines and singing. Please can we have any costumes in as soon as possible so we can do a dress rehearsal.  Thank you

We have been learning about road safety this week. We have been thinking about all the rules we need to follow to cross the road and made a poster. We also went out into Buckden and crossed the road holding an adults hand.

On Thursday we celebrated Thanks giving. We learnt the story of Thanks giving and made turkeys. We also made some lovely cookies.

In our collective worship we have lit our first advent candle.

This week in phonics we have been learning the sounds ss, ll, l and ff. We have been using all the sounds that we have learnt so far to write words and read. We have been using our skills to label fossils that we have drawn.

In maths we have been focusing one more and one less. We have been using number lines objects and calculations.

Today we have been celebrating bon fire night. We have made lots of firework pictures and we made a bonfire and guy in our nature area.

In RE we read the story of the two builders.

In Spanish we have been looking at the colour yellow.

This week in phonics we have been learning the sounds h, b and f. We have been using all the sounds that we have learnt so far to write words and read.

In maths we have been focusing on measuring height and weight in different ways. We have looked at weighing scales and how they work, using vocabulary such as heavy, light, tall, big, short etc.

Today we have been thinking about Diwali. We have been making rangoli patterns, mehndi hands and lanterns.

In RE we read the story of Jonah and the big fish.

In Spanish we have been looking at colours and linguascope.

Talk homework: What is big, small, heavy, light?

This week in phonics we have been learning the sounds e, u and r. We have been using all the sounds that we have learnt so far to write words and read.

In maths we have been focusing on the number 10. We have been on a numeral hunt around the school and found loads of numbers.

This week we have been looking at dinosaurs again. You may have heard that on Tuesday we had a dinosaur come to visit school. When we went out for our walk there were massive footprints on the playground and when we looked at the CCTV video we saw that dinosaurs had visited our school and chased Mrs Woodward. We had to make poster to warn everyone else in the school about the dinosaurs. In the end Mr Chris found them and chased them back to the museum.

 

In RE we read the story of Noahs Ark.

In Spanish we learn how to say blue.

Talk homework: How big is a T-rex?

This week in phonics we have been learning the sounds c, k and o. We have been using all the sounds that we have learnt so far to write words and add a caption to a picture. We are now starting to think about using these independently.

In maths we have been focusing on the numbers 8 and 9. We have been using our fingers to represent numbers.

This week we have been looking at dinosaurs. We made our own dinosaur land using stones, pine cones, mud, logs, feathers and leaves.

We have also learnt how to use powder paint and that when we mix blue and yellow then it make green. We used all these skills to paint a dinosaur using different shades of green.

We have been looking at the differences in dinosaurs and we have even designed and drawn some of our own dinosaurs.

In RE we read the story of the sower and the seed.

In Spanish we learn how to say red.

This week in phonics we have been learning the sound m,d,g. We have been trying to use all the sounds that we have learnt s far to make words.

In maths we have been learning all about the numbers 6 and 7.

We shared our all about me bags with our friends and it was really interesting to see who has similar likes to ourselves. We have also been learning about the story of Adam and Eve in our RE lessons.

We have had great fun in our doctors surgery outside. We have been ‘Have a go Admirals’ and we have been trying new things and having a go when we find it hard.

In RE we read the story of Adam and Eve.

In Spanish we learn how to say hello.

 

Friday 23rd September 2016

Talk homework: this week the children will be bringing in bags to fill with things that are all about them in order to then share this with other children in reception. Please do not put valuable items in the bags. Please can they be returned to school on Monday. 

We have had a very busy week this week.

In phonics we have been learning the sounds p,i,n. We have been trying to write our letters in a variety of ways and we have also started to look at how sounds can be blended together in order to read words.

In maths this week we have been looking at the number 4 and 5. We have been thinking about how many objects this number represents and what it looks like.

Some of us have been working really hard on our name writing this week and have wowed the teachers.

We have really enjoyed playing in the doctors surgery this week and have been suffering with a variety of ‘illnesses’. We are all very good doctors and nurses and by the end of the day everyone is feeling much better.

We have had a visit this week form the NSPCC to talk about ow to keep ourselves safe. We have been learning the PANTS rule with pantosaurus. Please see the NSPCC link blow for more information.

Friday 16th September 2016

Talk homework: talk about things to put in an ‘All about me’ bag. Bag to follow. 

This week we have been really busy in Reception.

We have started our phonics this wee and have been learning the sounds ‘a,s,t’. We have been thinking of lots of things starting with these letters. We have also been looking at the tricky words ‘I’ and ‘can’

Some of us have enjoyed colouring in, we have been thinking about the colours we are using and staying in the lines. Some of us have enjoyed playing with the babies. Some of us have been drawing and practicing our letters on the chalk boards. We have had great fun outside on the pirate ship and building jigsaw puzzles.

Lunch has been really scrummy this week. The best bit was pudding!!!!

We are all very tired but are looking forward to another week next week.

Talk homework: talk about what you have enjoyed at school this week.

This week has been our first week in reception. We have explored the school and our classrooms.

Some of us have enjoyed playing on the pirate ship. We have been phoning everybody and playing with our friends. We have been getting trapped in the imaginary ink. We have walked the plank and sent our friends that were pirates into the water.

We have been going through the caterpillar.

We have been drawing lots of colourful pictures to put up in our art gallery.

We have made lots of new friends both in our class and in the older classes.

 

We have eaten all our lunch which was really yummy!

We are looking forward to another week next week!
